03 Application process and tuition fees

When planning to study in Norway, it’s important to research the programs thoroughly to understand the admission requirements, application deadlines, and the overall process. This step provides an overview of what to expect and how to get started.

When researching the programs, you will find all the necessary information on higher education institution's website. They state the requirements for eligibility to apply, such as English language proficiency (including the required level and certification), average grades from bachelor’s studies or previous studies, and other important details. If you cannot find information specific to your country or some other important information, contact their student services.

Application deadlines for study programs are announced well in advance, with some as early as 10 months before the program's start. This ensures you will know early if you are accepted, giving you time to plan your arrival and apply for a study permit. Check the deadlines that apply to you! Most of the application process can be completed easily online.

PhD positions are usually posted in academic job listings since they are paid positions and may include a certain percentage of teaching responsibilities. While completing a PhD degree, you are considered a researcher and work in a specific department to contribute to and further their research. Therefore, these positions can be found on official university pages, and even Finn.no, where other jobs in Norway are posted as well.

Recognition of foreign education

In most cases, you don't need to apply for recognition of foreign education in Norway to study. However, if the higher education institution asks for your education to be recognized, you should contact the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills.

Tuition Fees

While doctoral candidates do not pay for their education and are considered employees of the universities, bachelor’s and master’s students from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland must pay tuition fees determined by Norwegian institutions. However, if you are coming from Switzerland or an EU/EEA country, public higher education is free, and you don't have to pay tuition fees. There are some instances in which you may be exempted from paying tuition fees; check if they apply to you.
